Album cover inspiration - Milo

Artist: Frank Turner.
Album: Tape Deck Heart.

I like the literal design of this cover because it is something that only appears in 'indie' music. I also think that the colours compliment each other in a style that would work well, not just on a CD case or digitally, but also as a vinyl sleeve or poster.

Artist: Muse.
Album: Drones.

I like this album cover and it's political undertone that implies we are all 'drones' that have no free will. This is an idea that occurs frequently in muse songs and i believe it is inspired by the book '1984' as it is directly quoted in some of their songs.

Artist: Imagine Dragons.
EP: Continued silence.

Even though this is not an 'album' cover, artistically, it holds a lot of merit. I greatly wish to recreate this photographic technique for my own album cover as i believe it will work well with our song choice and concept that we are trying to convey.

Artist: Vampire weekend.
Album: Vampire weekend.

This album cover nicely recreates a scene that is common in indie music videos, or any music videos, a party. The thing i like about this particular design is that is does not focus on the party itself, just a meaningless object that is in the room. But it is still possible to guess what is going on slightly out of frame. I believe this is a very good and abstract use of composition that makes the cover look unique and memorable.

Weekly Update #1 - (07/09/15 - 11/09/15)

This is the first week back after the summer holidays. Before the holidays we were all in different groups but some people left and therefore we are decided that two groups of two would joint to create one single group.

We mainly looked at music videos for inspiration, for camera shot we might want to film and get produce a list of scene which we like and might want to use in our music video. This included watch past A2 music video which previous student have created and watching different artists music video and their work.

We created a style mood boards which will help us an inspire us, when styling our band members for the music video and also the types of people which will listen to our music. We also listened to lots of songs in order to try and establish a genre that we like, once we had that done this we created a 20 song playlist of potential songs which me wanted to use for our music.

We did some audience research on UK tribes to help us understand what our audience is like to help match the music with our audience which we will be targeting. We also created band biography, to help other understand how our band came to be and what they are all about. In addition to this we created a band logo show that we can also be recognised as a brand as well and a music band.

our logo:

Towards the end of the week we also split the tasks equally between the four of us so that we can make sure that everyone was completing tasks on the schedule and other post which we think are relevant for our research.

Band Members // Styling

We have chosen the song 'Spark' by Amber Run. For that reason we wanted to style our band around them. However, they have 5 members and we only want to use 2, so we came to the decision to also style our band around the indie/pop group,'Circa Waves'. They have more of a simple dress style, as it consists of t-shirts and jeans, similar to an 'indie' or 'skater' dress sense. They also wear more neutral colours which will work well with the song choice, as we want a consistent monochrome look for our video.

In our video we want to show a contrast between two lifestyles, one happy and content, surrounded by friends, and another, alone and depressed. We hope to show the emotion through the use of body movement and facial expressions alongside various filming techniques. Having a simple design style, with dull colours, will hopefully help to emphasize the song's emotions and lyrical content, meaning we can get the desired outcome of a contrasting and cinematic music video. The actor's, or band member's, clothing will play a large part in this, as the colours and style of their clothing will reflect their various moods at different times in the video.

20 Possible Song Choices

This post contains 20 song choices that as a collective we made to help aid our final song decision. The majority of the songs we picked fit into an indie/alternative category. We hope to make a video that uses both concept and performance elements, so wanted to pick a song that would fit this idea. When deciding on songs for this list, we looked at certain videos for the songs and decided whether they worked well as both storyboard and performance videos. The majority of these songs encounter these elements in their videos and we decided to fit in with the convention of this genre by following a similar style.
  1. Kongos – Escape
  2. Newton Faulkner – Dreams Catch Me
  3. Sunset Sons – Remember
  4. Years and Years – Shine
  5. Hozier – From Eden
  6. Circa Waves – Stuck in my Teeth
  7. Asgeir – King and Cross
  8. Amber Run – Spark
  9. Peace – Blue
  10. Imagine Dragons – Nothing Left to Say
